The fighting between British troops and colonists illustrated economic, political and cultural conflicts in the Revolution of 1776. The colonists had in their 13 colonies developed their own identity based on dealing with the natural environment of a new country and also developed a pioneering spirit forged from taming the wilderness and creating a new society based not on class so much as on equitable relations (other than the slave trade) and this was opposed to the British strong class society and culture of deference to kings and lords, etc.,
