He gained national attention during the Bleeding Kansas crises of 1856 in which he along with his supporter killed the supporters of slavery. Later at the Battle of Black Jack he commanded the anti-slavery forces. In 1859 John Brown also led a raid on Harper's Ferry (a federal armory) and tried to start a slave liberation movement. He seized the armory but his movement was fizzled out within 2 days and his men were killed and captured. Brown was tried and found guilty and later was hanged.
