"In the 1930s, E.C Tolman claimed that humans (and even lab rats) could "map" out where they are in the world by drawing a mental image in their mind. His experiments demonstrated that rats could find their way through mazes with fewer and fewer errors if given multiple opportunities for success. In addition, chimpanzees who were carried through a maze could later navigate it alone. The animals developed “cognitive maps” to get where they needed to go." (FLVS Psychology course)
