One of the most important influences that led to the colonial independence movement was the Enlightenment. During the Enlightenment, philosophers debated concepts such as natural rights, freedom of religion and the equality of men. They also emphasized the importance of the reason and the right of people to participate in government. This movement led to many political changes around the world.

One of these changes was the movement for independence in the United States. The Enlightenment contributed to this fight in many different ways. Colonists felt empower by the ideals of representation. They also began to believe that people deserved to chose their own government, and that government should be removed if it was not effective. An example of this was the pamphlet Common Sense by Thomas Paine. This pamphlet summarized many of these ideas while presenting them as common sense.

November 5th, 1883

Once again, today was not easy at all. I just turned 13 a few days ago, but I haven't had a moment to celebrate, working from morning to night. I have a few minutes to write in this diary and then I must sleep if I want to work properly the next day. I work in a factory with big machines, so it's easy to get hurt badly. Today and girl got some of her hair ripped off, and the other day a boy almost lost his full finger. These things happen often and I'm lucky I do't get the bigger and harder jobs and that I'm not 8 or 9 like some workers. It isn't as bad as I make it out to be. I do work from dawn to after dusk, but I come from a family that isn't dirt poor and I do get enough food to get by. Sadly, must say goodbye and sleep if I want to function correctly tomorrow.

Which of the following events resulted from nepoleon's invasion of spain in the early 1800's? (apex)
cluponka [151]

The choices for this question are:

A. Revolts against Spanish rule broke out throughout the Americas

B. Colonists in North America successfully declared their independence

C. Spanish leaders abandoned Europe to more effectively govern their American Colonies

D. Spain joined with the United States to develop more trade in the colonies

The correct answer is A.

Many populations in Spanish America took advantage of the political situation in Spain to fight for their independence. This was the start of the decolonization of Latin America.

In Mexico, the war of independence was won in 1821. In 1822, after a brief monarchic period, the Republic was declared.

In Brazil, the independence was declared in 1822 after political changes in the country caused by the transference of the Portuguese crown to the Brazilian territory because of Napoleon's threat of invasion of Portugal.

In this period Simon Bolívar, military and political leader tried to unite Latin America based on a Latin-American identity. Because of this, he helped to set free the territories that became Venezuela, Bolívia, and Peru among many others.
