The 3 types of islands are
1. the continental islands
2. the high islands
3. the low islands
How the continental islands were created:
The Continental islands used to be connected to continents before the sea level changes and tectonic activity essentially isolated them. The tectonic activity refers to the movement and collision of different sections/plates of the Earth’s crust.
How the high islands were made:
High islands, aka, volcanic islands, were made by volcanic eruptions that built up land over time. The eruptions started under water, but then the hot magma cooled and hardened by the ocean. With time, this activity forms and shapes islands with a steep central peak.( That's why they call it the “high island.”) The ridges and valleys extended outward from the peak, and then toward the coastline.
How the low islands were created:
Low islands aka the coral islands. Are made up of the skeletons and living bodies of small marine animals that are known as the corals. Sometimes, the coral islands barely reach above sea level. (That's why they call it the “low island.”) Low islands often take the form of an irregular ring of very small islands, called an atoll, surrounding a lagoon. An atoll forms when a coral reef starts to builds up around a volcanic island. Then the volcanic island erodes away, leaving a lagoon. Atolls are defined as one island even though they are made up of various communities of coral.
