I think the most important factor is the class. The working people most likely were in unsafe working conditions or died from hard labor.

Also it made arming, cothing and feeding soldiers cheaper than training them. So now young boys were recruited, armed, hopelessly undertrained and thrown into trench to die, hopefuly killing some opposing soldiers before that. It made soldiers a resource to be expended.
