I think Gupta's enforcement of the caste rules was a good idea because it kept the people in line and peaceful. On the other hand, it was a disadvantage for the people who are in the lowest level of the system since they cannot change it. It also does not boost the morale in that level. Buddhist teachings were against it and would want equality.
