Florida also attracted other European nation to explore the region. France also sends an expedition in 1562 through Jean Ribault to explore the area. René Goulaine de Laudonnière establishes Fort Caroline.

The presence of the French in Florida led to the hasten across the Atlantic by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés to remove French and establish a colony. Menéndez arrived in 1565 and established the first permanent settlement.

Pánfilo de Narváez was an explorer and soldier from Spain who helped conquer Cuba in 1511. He also led an expedition to North America in 1527. He claimed Tampa Bay for Spain in 1528 when his ship landed on the west coast of Florida after surviving from a hurricane.
