Mixed nations and borders. You can use the question itself to get the answer, since imperialism left such a strong legacy in africa, the borders were so defined and the natives were forced to abide by them. So there is no reason for there to be any confusion about what is where.

I don't know if this is what you're looking for but during this time the North and the South we're in a bloodless battle against each other. the South wanted Kansas to be a slave state (the Kansas-Nebraska act led them to believe that) and the North wanted it to be a free state. so In 1855 when it was time to elect members of the legislature Southerners from Missouri poured into Kansas and voted early and often so Kansas leaned pro-slavery. the slave supporters then created their own government at Shawnee mission but since the free-soilers (abolitionists) couldn't except this they establish their own legislature in Topeka. so kansans had to choose between two governments one that was based on fraud and the other one that was based on the illegality
