Somatic cells are the ones obtained by mitosis. They constitute the body tissues and have a variety of different functions. They are <em>diploid</em>, which means they have two copies of each chromosome (2n), one obtained from the father and one from the mother.

Gametes are obtained by meiosis. A diploid cell divides to form four <em>haploid </em>gametes, they have a single copy of each chromosome (n), obtained from the parent cell.

Zygotes are obtained by the fusion of two gametes, one from the father and one from the mother, they are <em>diploid </em>again having two copies of each chromosome.
