during the early 1900s the west (america and europe) started invading and stealing resources from "uncivil" places under the guise of helping the people who lived there while stealing natural resouces to fuel either thier war machine or economies such as the belgians control of the congo and how they massacred the people there to steal their rubber (a valuable resource at the time)

Basically, big countries started rapidly industrializing and since they needed resources such as coal and oil and money they needed then to conquer other countries and take it from them. This led to imperialism where European countries would colonize Africa, for example, and take their natural resources back to the European country so that they could process it and develop more.
