I usually like to find what 1% is, which is a number that multiplied by 100 is the total. if 500,000 is the total, the divide it by 100 to get your 1% (or move the decimal ahead 2 places.) what you should get is 5,000 as 1%. So 5,000 is 1% of 500,000. A
