In the past, upper-class French Society had a traditional gender roles expectation toward women. For example, The women were not allowed to leave the house unless their husband gave permission,  They were not allowed to pursue a career that they wanted to, they can be married off by the parents to the men they don't like ,etc.

So to fill up her time, Berthe Morisot choose to became a painter. (Painters don't have to leave their house, so most husbands wouldn't have a problem with it)

As objects for her painting, she choose to depict the daily activities that women in french tend to do everyday. Such as women braiding her daughter's hair, a mother taking care of her baby, etc.
