in the 17th century, the advanced in navigation technology among European empires are better compared to the vast majority of the world.

This opened up opportunities for European Countries (Including Britain) to use their navigation technology to reach less developed countries across the world. (at that time, this was a very difficult feat).

After they reached the less-developed countries, Britain used both its wealth and military prowess to create colonies. These colonies mainly created as a source of natural resources and a trading point that will improve' European empires position in the international market. Often times, they have to be involved in the local's politic in order to influence the local rulers to support their bidding.
