Scientists know that a mutation - or alteration - in a particular gene's DNA may contribute to a certain disease. However, it can be very difficult to develop a test to detect these mutations, because most large genes have many regions where mutations can occur. For example, researchers believe that mutations in the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 cause as many as 60 percent of all cases of hereditary breast and ovarian cancers. But there is not one specific mutation responsible for all of these cases. Researchers have already discovered over 800 different mutations in BRCA1 alone.

The DNA microarray is a tool used to determine whether the DNA from a particular individual contains a mutation in genes like BRCA1and BRCA2. The chip consists of a small glass plate encased in plastic. Some companies manufacture microarrays using methods similar to those used to make computer microchips. On the surface, each chip contains thousands of short, synthetic, single-stranded DNA sequences, which together add up to the normal gene in question, and to variants (mutations) of that gene that have been found in the human population.

What do stomata Get from the environment?
Liono4ka [1.6K]

Answer:

Plants, by contrast, breathe through tiny pores called stomata on the underside of their leaves. These pores allow carbon dioxide to enter and oxygen to exit. Plants open and close their stomata in response to changes in their environment so they can get the CO2 they need, and avoid drying out.

(Ch. 27.4) Many people are allergic to substances in the environment, such as ragweed pollen, as well as foods, such as peanuts.
djverab [1.8K]

Answer:

C. The substance does not directly harm tissues and is not a pathogen, but nevertheless triggers an inflammatory response.

Explanation:

When a person is allergic to a substance, his or her immune system recognizes a harmless substance, such as components in food, pollen, or dust, as a treat. As a consequence, it starts an immune response that leads to inflammation. The substance that starts the allergic reaction is called an allergen, and it is not a pathogen because it is not a real threat to the body since it does not infect cells. When the allergen enters the body, it binds to antibodies that are in contact with a special type of cell. These specific cells will release a substance known as histamine. Histamine will produce an inflammatory reaction affecting different tissues in our body. For example, it can make us sneeze, have a running nose, swelling parts of our body, have itchiness and redness, amongst others.
