Answer:

4) smaller number is 9, larger number is 12

13) 38.45=5m+8.5

m=5.99

Step-by-step explanation:

x+y=21      the sum of two numbers is 21

x-3=.5y  the smaller number is 3 more than half the larger number

multiply both sides by 2 and you get 2x-6=y

plug that equation into the first equation and you get x+2x-6=21

simplifying you get 3x-6=21 add 6 to  both sides and you get 3x=27

x=9 so the smaller number is 9 then you plug that back into the first equation and get y=12

let m be the cost of 1 movie and c be the cost of the cd

38.45=5m+c

38.45=5m+8.5 this is the equation you use

subtract 8.5 from both sides and you get 29.95=5m

divide both sides by 5

5.99=m the answer

It's just 24.53 because the hundredth place is the 3, but the value after it is not high enough to round it up. Therefore, the answer is 24.53

Elza [17]

a.

Sally has $28.00 in her bank account and starts saving $18.25 every week.

Let x represent the number of weeks from when he have $28.00 in her account.

and y represent the amount in her account at week x;

We can write the function of the case as;

y=mx+b

where m is the amount she saves every week, and b the initial amount in her account.

\begin{gathered} m=\text{ \$18.25} \\ b=\text{ \$28.00} \end{gathered}

So, the function will be;

y=18.25x+28

b.

Her friend Suzy has $161.00 in her bank account and is withdrawing $15 every week.

Using the same rule as in a above;

\begin{gathered} m=-15\text{ (withdrawing is negative)} \\ b=161 \end{gathered}

The function will be;

y=-15x+161

c.

The graph of the two functions is shown below;

d.

The point where the two lines intersect is shown in the graph above.

The point is at;

(4,101)

Which is at week 4 and balance $101.

e.

The point at which they intersect is the point where they both have the same values.

It is the week when both Sally and Suzy have the same amount in there account.

So, at the fourth week (week 4) Sally and Suzy both have $101 in their account
