They were used merely in cooking, for they don't trust it. So, when Steuben came and saw the situation, he taught them the proper use of the bayonets. Thus, the men came to know the useful nature of the bayonets, for even though it may not be as successful as shooting someone or killing a person immediately, it could still inflict a heavy wound on the person, and also lead to major infections.
