Friedrich von Steuben was Prussian nobleman who had been a fighter even during the Seven Years War.  On Feb. 23, 1778 he came to Valley Forge and saw that the revolutionary soldiers did not know how to use the bayonets in their rifles. They were used merely in cooking, for they don't trust it. So, when Steuben came and saw the situation, he taught them the proper use of the bayonets. Thus, the men came to know the useful nature of the bayonets, for even though it may not be as successful as shooting someone or killing a person immediately, it could still inflict a heavy wound on the person, and also lead to major infections.

Empathic listening acquires therapeutic value for someone battling with a problem, as it allows them to solve their difficulties in the company of a caring, mindful listener. You must epower, support and higher the person and their self esteem. You must create a safe space where the person is not pressured or feels embarassed. If the person has any doubts that their problems are not important, you must remind them of their value and that you are there for them. You must build mutual respect, trust, and understanding. Remember to  ask open ended questions that invite more from the speaker.
