Staying near rivers, lakes, and other freshwater sources definitely benefited early nomads with food and water (fish, which provided meat, and the water, which provided a source for drinking). It also proected them from enemies because they were surrounded by water and the ennemies would have had to get over the water to get to them. Finally, it benefited them with transportation because with the rivers, they could use boats to travel and move around. As a result, the availability of animals did not really benefit early nomads staying near rivers, lakes, and other freshwater sources. (even if they had fish, they didn't have as much choice like if they were in the forest or the mountains)
