After Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, the United Nations Security Council decided to impose to Ba'athist Iraq a trade embargo as well as some sanctions concerning its economy. The sanctions began on August 6, 1990 until May 22, 2003 and they are still present related to reparations to Kuwait.

These sanctions' purpose was to force Iraq to leave Kuwait, to pay for the different reparations, as well as to eliminate any kind of weapons of mass destruction. Iraq could not use any kind of trade and financial resources. However, Iraq could use medicine as well as foodstuffs when there were  humanitarian circumstances.
