These are small consecutive repetitive sections of the DNA – mostly between 5 – 50 times repetitions. They are not part of coding regions (genes) and therefore are prone to non-lethal mutations of DNA. They are therefore very variable between individuals and can be used for DNA forensic identification.
STRs are also called microsatellites and are characterized by base pairs that are repeated side by side along the DNA molecule. STRs are extremely important for science because they can be used as genetic markers and are the basis for DNA identification systems. DNA is made up of numerous STRs so molecular kinship studies between species are favored with the use of STRs.
