When population growth increases, the strain on the resources increases, due to increased competition, and hence the resources decrease. This is why ideally apopulation cannot grow indefinitely because resources are always limited. The population growth will start to levels off as it reaches carrying capacity. When the resources become depleted the population growth plummets.
