"Tornado Coming"
Snowcat [4.5K]

Answer and explanation:

"Tornado Coming!" is a short story by D.ick Donley. Matt is a boy who lives on the Ozark Hills. He is home alone - only accompanied by his dog - when he hears the siren warning that a tornado is forming.

Matt reacts by immediately looking for shelter. He picks up his dog and heads to a cellar, where they both will be safe. However, when he is about to enter the cellar, he realizes Mrs. Laney's house will be hit by the tornado. He leaves his dog safely in the cellar and goes to help Mrs. Laney.

Mrs. Laney is an old lady who has arthritis is who is quite rude to Matt because his dog digs up her garden. When Matt arrives at her house, Mrs. Laney is sitting in her rocking chair in her bedroom, even though the tornado is coming. The reason why Mrs. Laney does not react like Matt is that she probably didn't hear the siren. She asks Matt to speak up when he talks to her, which may be a sign of difficulty hearing. Another reason seems to be that she is quite skeptical about things in general. She does not believe Matt when he says a tornado is coming. Only after the house is hit - and they remain safe thanks to Matt - does she acknowledge it was a tornado.
