Renaissance Humanism was a philosophical and intellectual movement that was initiated by Italian poet and scholar Petrarch during the 14th century. It consisted on the restoration and renewal of all the artistic, scientific, philosophical and legal knowledge inherited from the Greeks and the Romans of Classical antiquity.

It was secular according to Medieval standards in that although it remained religious, it put human beings and their society at the forefront of every philosophical and political concern.
