It helped by giving the people something to hunt with and defend their self with. THe paleolithic period was hard and you died easly. The spears where made for pertection and hunting.

Alfred Thayer Mahan wrote a very important book "The influence of Sea Power Upon History" , this book and another one, gained recognition in Europe and set the example of how the British empire grew based on its naval power. This was like a teaching for the American in order to develop the concept of Manifest Destiny.
