It says, "She was a large woman with a large purse that had everything in it but hammers and nails." Hammer and nails are used to fix things. Mrs. Jones helps Roger become a better person. She has a lot of compassion and generosity inside of her, which represents that she has a lot of good things about her. She is represented as a saint because a carpenter uses "hammers and nails" and Jesus was the most famous carpenter.
