Pulmonary surfactant is a surface-active phospholipoprotein produced by the type II alveolar cells of the lungs. The pulmonary surfactant is composed of proteins and lipids, which has both hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions.
The lack of this pulmonary surfactant in the lungs can cause respiratory problems in infants.
