If green algae cells in a buffer solution containing only inorganic salts are placed in a sealed container at room temperature w

ith excess carbon dioxide gas and exposed to light, the cells will:(A) live for many hours and multiply.(B) live for several hours, but fail to multiply because there is no source of carbon in the buffer solution.(C) live for several hours, but fail to multiply because no oxygen is present.(D) die rapidly, because no oxygen is present.

Answer:

(A) live for many hours and multiply.

Green algae will undergo <u>oxygenetic photosynthesis (</u>non-cyclic photosynthesis oxygen by-product )  under this condition in  their <u>Cytoplasm  </u>instead of <u>chloroplasts in plants,</u> and  instead of anooxygenic photosynthesis(without oxygen by-product) of  bacteria.

They absorb light through <u>accessory pigments </u>and pass  this to <u>chlorophyll a and b. </u>The Carbon atom in this process is from inorganic salts <u>H2CO3-, </u>and  which react to form  <u>C02. </u>The latter  diffuses into the algae for the process of photosynthesis.

Naturally this oxygenic photosynthesis is important to algae because  it helps to suppress photo-oxidation.This is because the production of C02  from the inorganic salt, inhibits the activities of Ribulose Biphospate(RuBP), thereby preventing photo-oxodation from taken place.

In addition, the ability of this organism to raise the C02 concentration level close to the level of enzyme Rubisco by concentrating levels of inorganic carbon than the environmental  C02 of the atmosphere, ensures constant supply of C02 for photosynthesis.  This  carbon (from inorganic salt) is rarely limiting  therefore  improving the efficiency of this photosynthetic  process.

Thus, the organism undergoes photosynthesis to produce glucose with oxygen as the by-product in the usual green plant fashion .

Which of the following BEST describes transcriptional regulation of the lac operon in E. coli?
Alexeev081 [22]

Answer:

E. On in the presence of lactose and absence of glucose

Explanation:

Expression of lac operon synthesizes the enzymes required for catabolism of lactose sugar. When both glucose and lactose are available, glucose is preferred as a nutrient and the lac operon is not expressed.

Lac operon is expressed only when glucose is absent in the medium and lactose is present. If any of the two conditions deviate, the operon is not expressed.

In the absence of glucose and the presence of lactose, the repressor is rendered inactive to bind to the operator. RNA polymerase enzyme is free to bind to the promoter and continue the process of transcription.

The reduced levels of glucose increase the cAMP levels which in turn bind to the Catabolite activator protein (CAP). CAP is a positive regulator that binds to the promoter to facilitate the transcription of the operon by RNA polymerase.
