The Romanus Pontifex (1454) included papal decree for the opening up of southern Africa, led to the enslavement of non-Christian natives of Africa and the New World and gave Portugal a trade monopoly over areas of Africa and Asia. The Romanus Pontifex granted control over any newly discovered lands to Portugal.
