By 1890, the United States had by far the world's most productive economy. American industry produced twice as much as its closest competitor--Britain. But the United States was not a great military or diplomatic power. Its army numbered less than 30,000 troops, and its navy had only about 10,000 seamen. Britain's army was five times the size of its American counterpart, and its navy was ten times bigger. The United States' military was small because the country was situated between two large oceans and was surrounded by weak or friendly nations. It faced no serious military threats and had little interest in asserting military power overseas.<span>
During the late 19th century, the idea that the United States had a special mission to uplift "backward" people around the world also commanded growing support. The mainstream Protestant religious denominations established religion missions in Africa and Asia, including 500 missions in China by 1890.</span>

It led to the industrial revolution because Protestants were part of the reformation. If you think about it, it can include the fact that the Industrial revolution was when industries were being built and everybody was manufacturing things. How did nationalism affect the foreign affairs of the United States

Nationalism-the loyalty and devotion to one's nation.
For one, people in America were like "lets go to war with Britain" which spurred the War of 1812. So if that's any correlation to how it affected foreign affairs, there ya go.
Our foreign affairs were affected because we were proud to be Americans. We got more active in conflicts and defended our country and its people mainly due to agrarianism (You'll probably learn about that in US History in HS), which was the belief Thomas Jefferson had that if people owned land, they would fight for this country.
To really answer your question, we were on and off friends with our foreign comrades. We went to war as a result, and established our power in the world.
