England had not been a united country until Alfred the great and his immediate ancestors had defeated the Danish (Viking) kingdoms of Mercia and East Anglia and the Norwegian (other vikings) kingdoms of Northumbria, it had only been independent of the Norwegian crown for just over 100 years before the Normans arrived. Vikings were not just raiders, they also settled,their DNA has been found throughout Britain. 
So all of this says that the viking pretty much made England its self.
