In the first chapter we establish how this civilization functions. The boys shot down over the tropical island where the novel takes place, so you may visualize this island, whatever you feel like picturing there, it doesn't just have to be the thing written. I would for example imagine the smell of the sea. The boys are between civilization and savagery here and that is the main conflict in the novel.

In your opinion, why do you think racism still exists?
Juliette [100K]
Racism might still exist because people live in the past. Such as teaching their children to continue seeking their race as the supreme and better race over the rest. Some people might just be affected by one person from an entire race. Such as a shooting of a white person done by a black person. This can be seen as hatred towards all black people hated because of one person doing such a crime. (My opinion)

To kill a mockingbird was published in 1961. Why do you think Harper lee felt the need to write it. Fifty-seven years later, why
Helga [31]

Harper Lee wrote To Kill a Mockingbird based on some events that actually happened to her growing up as a child. The book is still very relevant today because it allows us to look back at our history and recognize the institutional discrimination that had been built up generation from generation and its effects on everyday life.
