Among the many symbolisms used in the story, one that is very indicative is the one portrayed by this excerpt, when Granny remembers the days when she would use kerosene lamps, and how she perceived life from that soft, not so powerful light, whereas now, as she looks around and realizes the power of electricity, she sees things in a much different way. It seems almost as if electrical power was able to show her realities that she was unable to see before. One of them, is, that maybe the doctor, who, she had criticized so much before, was not as bad as she had first thought.
