Aaron Ogden was given an exclusive license to operate a shipping business within the State of New York. He sued a man named Thomas Gibbons, who ran a competing shipping business between New Jersey and New York City, claiming that Gibbon's operations in the State of New York were illegal.<span>The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of Thomas Gibbons.
