The United States wanted/got the Samoan Islands because of its strategic value as a naval base.

The base, based in the capital of Pago Pago, was an important refueling point and a jumping off point for naval exercises in the Southern Pacific Ocean.

Today, the island is under the control of the US Department of the Interior. They are represented in Congress by a nonvoting delegate.
