In order to solve this, you're going to need something called "absolute value" (it's basically putting vertical lines around a term like |x| ). And you're going to use it for all the values you have, and find the largest number. This is simply because absolute value literally means the distance from zero. So, doing the problem for you: you'd start off by finding the absolute value for each of those values [3/8 ,0.27, 0.3, 4/7]. It is only a matter of finding out that 4/7 is the largest of those four numbers. Hope I helped :)

If the angle is preserved, which describes the effect of moving the plane closer to the cone's vertex? Check all that apply.
Sholpan [36]

Let's go though the choices.

Major axis will get shorter.  TRUE, CHECK ME

As the plane moves closer to the vertex the ellipse stays the same shape but shrinks.

Ellipse will become a circle.  FALSE

As long as the plane is tilted, the ellipse can't be a circle.

Ellipse will degenerate to a point.  TRUE, CHECK ME

Eventually the plane gets to the vertex, at which point (ha!) we have a single point.

Nappes?  Is that a word?   FALSE

The plane needs a steeper angle, steeper than the generators, before it can pass through both halves.

The generators are the lines through the vertex that form the cone.  The plane isn't steep enough to hold any of them. FALSE

If 8 times a number is added to twice the number, the result is 60. the solution is
Andrei [34K]

Answer:

(8 * x) + 2x = 60

8x + 2x = 60

10x = 60

/10   /10

x = 6

8 is a constant that is being multiplied by an unknown number which we will name x. It is then being added to two times the unknown number(x), so we multiply x by 2, which is 2x. The final product will be 60, so in the equation it'll then equal 60.

We consider "a number" to be a variable that withholds an unknown value, which is x (or any other variable you prefer).
