Initially a tank contains 10 liters of pure water. Brine of unknown (but constant) concentration of salt is flowing in at 1 lite

r per minute. The water is mixed well and drained at 1 liter per minute. In 20 minutes there are 15 grams of salt in the tank. What is the concentration of salt in the incoming brine?

Answer:

Therefore the concentration of salt in the incoming brine is 1.73 g/L.

Step-by-step explanation:

Here the amount of incoming and outgoing of water are equal. Then the amount of water in the tank remain same = 10 liters.

Let the concentration of salt  be a gram/L

Let the amount salt in the tank at any time t be Q(t).

\frac{dQ}{dt} =\textrm {incoming rate - outgoing rate}

Incoming rate = (a g/L)×(1 L/min)

                       =a g/min

The concentration of salt in the tank at any time t is = \frac{Q(t)}{10}  g/L

Outgoing rate = (\frac{Q(t)}{10} g/L)(1 L/ min) \frac{Q(t)}{10} g/min

\frac{dQ}{dt} = a- \frac{Q(t)}{10}

\Rightarrow \frac{dQ}{10a-Q(t)} =\frac{1}{10} dt

Integrating both sides

\Rightarrow \int \frac{dQ}{10a-Q(t)} =\int\frac{1}{10} dt

\Rightarrow -log|10a-Q(t)|=\frac{1}{10} t +c        [ where c arbitrary constant]

Initial condition when t= 20 , Q(t)= 15 gram

\Rightarrow -log|10a-15|=\frac{1}{10}\times 20 +c

\Rightarrow -log|10a-15|-2=c

Therefore ,

-log|10a-Q(t)|=\frac{1}{10} t -log|10a-15|-2 .......(1)

In the starting time t=0 and Q(t)=0

Putting t=0 and Q(t)=0  in equation (1) we get

- log|10a|= -log|10a-15| -2

\Rightarrow- log|10a|+log|10a-15|= -2

\Rightarrow log|\frac{10a-15}{10a}|= -2

\Rightarrow |\frac{10a-15}{10a}|=e ^{-2}

\Rightarrow 1-\frac{15}{10a} =e^{-2}

\Rightarrow \frac{15}{10a} =1-e^{-2}

\Rightarrow \frac{3}{2a} =1-e^{-2}

\Rightarrow2a= \frac{3}{1-e^{-2}}

\Rightarrow a = 1.73

Therefore the concentration of salt in the incoming brine is 1.73 g/L

Two boards, one four inches wide and the other six inches wide, are nailed together to form an X. The angle at which they cross
Sunny_sXe [5.5K]

Answer:

The area of the unpainted region on the four inch board = 160·√3 in.²

Step-by-step explanation:

Here we have that the boards are crossing each other on their flat sides Therefore, when the boards are separated, the area of the unpainted region is the area of a parallelogram

The dimensions of the formed parallelogram are;

Interior angles = 60° and 120° (adjacent angles of a parallelogram)

Height, h of parallelogram formed = 4 inches

From the angle of crossing of the parallelogram, we have;

Angle between the width or perpendicular cross section of the 6 inches board and the angle of crossing of the two boards = 90° - 60° = 30°

Therefore, length of base, b of the parallelogram formed by the unpainted region is given as follows;

b = \frac{60}{cos(30)}  = 40\cdot \sqrt{3} \ inches

Therefore, the area of the parallelogram = b × h = 4 × 40·√3 = 160·√3 in.²

Hence, the area of the unpainted region on the four inch board = 160·√3 in.².

Which table represents a linear function?
mart [117]
Well, a linear function is proportional, a straight line (on a graph). And the numbers must not have the same answer. For instance, if the X input is 5, and the Y output is 7. And then another X input is 5, and the Y output is 8, that's non-linear.

So, the Answer would be the third graph. This is because the X values are steadily increasing, and so are the Y values.

For the X and Y values, for each time X increases by 1, Y increases by -8. This is, linear because both sides are constantly and evenly increasing.

Jessica is selling tickets for her softball team for $10 a ticket. Laurie is selling tickets for her softball team for $6 a tick
Mkey [24]

Answer:

90 tickets

Step-by-step explanation:

let the number of tickets be x

and the total amount each has be y

For Jessica

the amount is

y=10x--------1

for Laurie the amount is

Note: she has $360 already

y=360+6x-------2

to find the number of the tickets that will make them have the same amount, let us equate 1 and 2

10x=360+6x

10x-6x=360

4x=360

x=360/4

x=90
