In the batch cell growth curve, cell initially begins to be active in activities. However, a point is reached where the growth within the cell become constant. This is the stationary phase. Here, the cell no longer undergo the biological metabolism, but only get more weakened, used up its own cellular energy and thus become broken and divided. There's increased competition for nutrients and other mineral elements at this phase. Individual cell that can not withstand such fierce competition begins to die off, and ultimately less metabolically active.
