Answer:

0.363

Step-by-step explanation:

Number of Black(B) Socks =5

Number of Grey(G) Socks =7

Number of White(W) Socks =13

Total Number of Socks=5+7+13=25

If the two socks are picked one after the other, the total number reduces and the number of that particular color of socks picked also reduces.

To pick the same color, they could either be both black, grey of white.

Therefore:

P(they are of the same color)=P(BB)+P(GG)+P(WW)

=(\frac{5}{25}X\frac{4}{24})+(\frac{7}{25}X\frac{6}{24})+(\frac{13}{25}X\frac{12}{24})\\=0.363

The probability that they are of the same color is 0.363 correct to 3 significant figures.

The diameter of the average cell in the human body is 1 x 10-5 meters. The diameter of a grain of sand is about 2 x 10-4 meters.
MariettaO [177]
PART A:

Scientific notation is given by A×10ⁿ where A is any number in a unit and 'n' is an integer.

0.000025 = 2.5×10⁻⁵

PART B:

Diameter of grain of sand ÷ Diameter of human body average cell
(2×10⁻⁴) ÷ (1×10⁻⁵)
(2÷1) × (10⁻⁴÷10⁻⁵)
2 × (10⁻⁴ ⁻ ⁻⁵) = 2 × 10⁽⁻⁴⁺⁵⁾ = 2 × 10¹ = 20 times bigger

PART C:

The diameter of human body's average cell in nanometer
1 × 10⁻⁵ metre = 1 × 10⁻⁵ × 10⁹ = 1 × 10⁽⁻⁵⁺⁹⁾ = 1 × 10⁴ nanometer

PART D:

Smallest bacteria = 300 nanometer
300 nm = 300 ÷ 10⁹ = (3 × 10²) ÷ 10⁹ = 3 × (10²⁻⁹) = 3 × 10⁻⁷ meter

PART E:

Laws of exponents that are applied in scientific notation is

xᵇ × xᵃ = x⁽ᵇ⁺ᵃ⁾
xᵇ ÷ xᵃ = x⁽ᵇ⁻ᵃ⁾

The number in the blank box should be 44 because it said that "3 times x and 4 times y is 44".

You need to multiply the first equation by 3:

3x + 3y = 39.

Then, subtract the first equation from the second equation:

3x - 3x = 0

4y - 3y = y

44 - 39 = 5

Your new equation should look like this: y = 5

Now, substitute y = 5 into the first original equation:

x + 5 = 13

x = 8

Ans. (x, y) = (8, 5)
