James II, King of England, he was able to accomplish the gain absolute rule since he pursued Catholicism as the state religion and dismissed Parliament. He was ousted in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. He was the last Roman Catholic ruler to rule over the Kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland.
