Clearly. Charles has the advantage since his country, if not his party, invented the decimal system of measurements. He can have as much volume as he wants. But he didn’t accept the party thinking; he created the party thinking.

Not waving but downing .how does the word drowing add layer of the meaning to the poem?
Leviafan [203]

The choice of words used in the "Not Waving but Drowning" by Stevie Smith exemplified a tragic tone.

What is a tone?

A tone is the mood or attitude of the author as exemplified in the text and their choice of words.

Some of the words used are as follows:

  • "Nobody heard him, the dead man," [Line 1]
  • "(Still the dead one lay moaning)" [Line 11]

From the textual evidence above, it is clear that the tone of the poem is tragic as it speaks to someone who was fighting for his life but got his SOS call misinterpreted.
