Suppose you have a coffee mug with a circular cross section and vertical sides (uniform radius). What is its inside radius if it

holds 400.0 g of coffee when filled to a depth of 6.00 cm? Assume coffee has the same density of water. Answer in cm.

Coffee mug is cylindrical shape. Therefore,
Volume of mug = volume of cylinder = πr²h

r = inner radius of mug. h = height of coffee = 6 cm.
Density of coffee = Density of water = 1 g/ml

Therefore, volume of coffee = mass/density = 400/1 = 400 ml = 400 cm³
Volume of coffee = πr²h
400= πr²(6)
r² = 21.23
r = inner radius of mug = 4.607 cm

A scientist notices that an oil slick floating on water when viewed from above has many different colors reflecting off the surf
Elan Coil [88]

Answer:

(a) 313nm

(b) 250nm

(c) 301nm

Explanation:

This problem involves the concept of thin-film interference. The scientist observes constructive interference. In this case m = 1.

(a) To find the thickness of the oil at that spot we need to first calculate the wavelength in the oil.

       λ = λo/n = 750/ 1.20 = 625nm

λ = wavelength in the material of interest into which light is entering (the oil)

λo = wavelength in the material from which light is coming in or entering.

n = refractive index of the material into which the light is entering.

Light travels from air into the oil. So the refractive index used above is that of the oil and not air.

The formula relating the thickness t to the wavelength is 2t = mλ

m = 1 so,

    2t = λ = 625nm

     t = 625/2 = 313nm

(b) Supposing the refractive index of the water is now n = 1.50

The wavelength in the oil λ = 750/1.50 = 500nm

 The thickness t = λ/2 = 500/2 = 250nm

(c) If the oil has a thickness of 200nm then the wavelength λ = 2t = 2 ×200nm = 400nm

The wavelength in the oil is 400nm. In order to find the wavelength in water we set this wavelength to λo = 400nm. So the wavelength in water seen by the diver is given by the formula

       λ = λo/n

n for water is 1.33

      λ = 400/1.33 = 300.8nm ≈ 301nm.

A laser beam of total power 1 mW and wavelength 365 nm is incident on a clean piece of metal in vacuum. The metal has a work fun
Naily [24]

Answer: 1.84* 10 ^15 electrones /s for 365 nm. Maximum energy kinetic, 0.4 eV.

0 electrons/s for 730 nm,

Explanation: In order to solve this problem we have to take into account the following relationship for the the power is laser beam.

Power= Energy/time so we can considerer a numeber electrons/time* energy of each photon the we have the power of photon flux given by:

P=n*hν where n is the number of electrons per second and h the Plack constant.

The phton energy is equal h*c/λ;  where c is the speed of light

for  λ = 365 nm  we have E=1240/365 nm=3.4 eV ( 1eV=1.6 * 10^-19J)

so n= P/hν=1*10^-3/3.40 *1.6*10^-19 =1.84 * 10^15 electrons/s

The maximun kinetic energy of photolectrons is given by:

hν-W= Ek where W is the work function

then Ek=(3.4-3)eV= 0.4 eV

Finally, for the case of  λ =730 nm, the energy for this photon is

E=1240/730=1.7 eV

so with this energy it is not possible to obtain any photoelectrons because this energy is lower that the work fuction for this material.

Fudgin [204]

Answer:

A. 0.25 A

B. 4.5 V

Explanation:

A. The total resistance of resistances in series is:

R = R₁ + R₂

R = 18 Ω + 18 Ω

R = 36 Ω

Ohm's law:

V = IR

9 V = I (36 Ω)

I = 0.25 A

B. The voltage across the bulb (between P and the battery) can be found with Ohm's law.

V = IR

V = (0.25 A) (18 Ω)

V = 4.5 V
