The Taíno were an indigenous people of the Caribbean. These were the first people that Christopher Columbus encountered when he arrived to the continent. The Taíno inhabited most of Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, The Bahamas and the Antilles. They were different from Europeans in several ways:

  • The Taíno have a matrilineal system, while Europeans were patriarchal.
  • The Taíno practiced polygamy, while this was not accepted among Europeans.
  • The Taíno did not domesticate large animals for food as these were not available. The Europeans relied on pigs, goats, cows and similar animals for nourishment.
  • The Taíno were often naked or wearing few clothes, while Europeans considered this immoral.
