Cardiac muscles are considered smooth muscles.

False

Cardiac muscle with skeletal and smooth muscle are the three main types of muscles. Cardiac muscles are specialized form of muscles that contract repeatedly to provide circulation of blood throughout the body. Cardiac muscles are found only within the heart while smooth muscles can be found in the stomach and intestine.

Both cardiac and smooth muscles are not voluntary in nature but the cardiac muscles consist of striations which makes them different from the smooth muscles. Therefore, the statement is false.

Further Explanation:

The muscles of the body make up the muscular system. The muscles are composed of muscle fibers or muscle cells. These muscles are responsible for the body movements as they contract and relax.

The types of muscles in the body are as follows:

a. Cardiac muscle

The cardiac muscles are specifically present in the middle layer of the heart called myocardium. These are the involuntary muscles that exhibit rhythmic contractions. The sinoatrial node regulates these contractions in the heart. These muscles are thicker and shorter in structure and are composed of cardiocytes which have striated appearance. The cardiocytes arrange in a branching pattern to form a network that facilitates contraction in a coordinated manner. The contraction in the cardiac muscles decreases the size of the heart chamber and results in the release of blood out of it.

b. Smooth muscle

Smooth muscles lack striations and are found in the lining of the organs such as the stomach, urinary bladder, intestines, and uterus. They are also found in the eyes where they regulate the change in shape and size of lens and iris, respectively. These muscles are involuntary in nature which means they relax and expand as per the requirement by the body. For example, in the digestive tract, the smooth muscles help in the movement of nutrients and food that has been swallowed.

c. Skeletal muscle

The muscle tissues that are attached to the bones are skeletal muscles. The skeletal muscles help in the contraction and relaxation of the bones in response to a stimulus by the nervous system. The muscle fibers together form the skeletal muscles and have striations.

As a result, both smooth and cardiac muscles carry out involuntary functions but have different structures and are present in different parts of the body. Therefore, are not considered the same.
