What is the author's purpose in the following piece of writing? "Me want cookie!" shouts the Cookie Monster, scaring the young g
irls as she pulled cookies from the oven. She looks over and giggles, "You ALWAYS want cookies. How about I make you some broccoli and pasta?" "Me want cookie, Me WANT COOKIE!! MMMEEEEEEE WAANNTT COOOOOOKIE! Yay, yay!" A light went off in the girl's head, and she thought that there were many ways to make a cookie. Promising Cookie Monster a cookie, she went to work chopping and baking. Cookie Monster could not wait for the cookies to cool, so he scarfed one right out of the oven. The young girl watched him eating her broccoli and cheese cookies with a smile on her face. There is always more than one way to eat your vegetables.
The author’s purpose seems to be presenting the fun and excitement and ‘the craving’ for ‘only the desired thing and nothing else’ innocent and funny display peculiar to childhood sometimes even portrayed by adults. He also wants to show the ingenuity of the mind when the ‘she’ character cooks a vegetable and cheese cookie and makes the cookie monster eat it.
The realism in the dialogue makes the whole situation believable. The many ways to cook a cookie impress the reader with its novelty of perspective and the cleverness of the cookie-maker in the way she creates a sumptuous cookie out of broccoli and cheese and succeeds in making the monster eat it impresses.
