Jan Ernst Matzeliger (1852 – 1889) created the lasting machine, which significantly changed the way shoes were manufactured.

Matzeliger´s automated shoe laster was patented in 1883. It made possible to produce between 150 and 700 pairs of shoes a day. 50 pairs is what a skilled hand laster could produce in a ten-hour day. Matzeliger´s novelty cut shoe prices in half.
