THE UGLY DUCKLING

The ugly duckling doesn't fit with the other ducklings and grows up, to be a fabulous bird. In the beginning, he is teased because of his looks, in a quote, "As the ugly duckling grew, many animals in the pond criticized him. His feathers were too dark, his neck was too long, and his body was too big. His fellow ducklings refused to recognize that underneath the feathers, the ugly duckling was kind, good, and gentle. The ugly duckling shed many tears because none of the other animals would play with him."

Near the end, however, it states, "He believed that the swans would never be his friends and looked down into the pond in despair. Then, his eyes opened wide, for he saw his reflection. To his great astonishment, the ugly duckling discovered that he was a beautiful, royal swan! The swans welcomed their new friend, whose lovely appearance was matched only by his kind heart. He now felt like he belonged." Throughout the course of the story, the other birds' views change since now they realize how awful they felt for mistreating the ugly duckling.

THE PRINCESS AND THE PEA

The king and queen didn't believe that she was a princess, so they had her endure the trial of sleeping on twenty mattresses with a pea under the very bottom one. Near the beginning of the story, it states, "The disheveled maiden looked at the king in disbelief. "I am a princess, come to see the prince," she explained, all the while shivering. The king summoned his wife, the queen, for advice. The queen looked at the hideous creature in disbelief, thinking that no princess would ever allow herself to be found in such a state. She thought quickly and came up with a clever plan. The queen put a small pea at the bottom of a bed and piled twenty mattresses on top of it. When the girl arrived at the room, she had to climb a ladder to reach the top of the bed, where she collapsed in exhaustion." This is when the king and queen were in doubt that she was a princess.

However later on it stated, "Bright and early the next morning, the king and queen arrived at the girl's bed-chamber. The queen asked the girl how she had slept the night before. "Absolutely terribly!" bemoaned the maiden. "I have spent the entire night tossing and turning. I don't know whether there is something hard in the bed, or your mattresses are rocks, but my body is black and blue." The queen and the king stared at the maiden in astonishment. Only a real princess would have such delicate skin that she could feel a pea under twenty mattresses. The queen and king brought her to the prince, who was thrilled to meet a real princess with such an independent spirit." As you can see the king and queen believed that she was a princess now because they stated, "Only a real princess would have such delicate skin that she could feel a pea under twenty mattresses."

_____________________________________________________________

CONCLUSION
Both stories focus on how the main character is doubted or mistreated because of how they look, but throughout the stories, the main character proves them wrong.

A 63 gram piece of magnesium absorbs 6689 joules of heat. The final temperature is 663 degrees Celsius. What was the initial tem
Gemiola [76]

Answer:

559^{\circ}C

Explanation:

When heat is supplied to a substance, the temperature of the substance increases according to:

Q=m C (T_f-T_i)

where

Q is the amount of heat supplied

m is the mass of the substance

C is the specific heat capacity of the substance

T_i is the initial temperature

T_f is the final temperature

For the sample of magnesium in this problem, we have:

m = 63 g is the mass

Q = 6689 J is the hear supplied

C = 1.023 J/gC is the specific heat capacity

T_f=663^{\circ}C is the final temperature

Solving the formula for T_i, we find the final temperature:

T_i = T_f-\frac{Q}{mC}=663-\frac{6689}{(63)(1.023)}=559^{\circ}C

Write the equilibrium constant expression for the following reaction in terms of concentrations of the components. (Concentratio
timofeeve [1]

<u>Answer:</u> The expression for equilibrium constant in terms of concentration is K_c=[CO_2]

<u>Explanation:</u>

Equilibrium constant in terms of concentration is defined as the ratio of concentration of products to the concentration of reactants each raised to the power their stoichiometric coefficients. It is represented by K_{c}

For a general chemical reaction:

aA+bB\rightarrow cC+dD

The K_{c} is written as:

K_{c}=\frac{[C]^c[D]^d}{[A]^a[B]^b}

The concentration of pure solids and pure liquids are taken as 1.

For the given chemical reaction:

MgCO_3(s)\rightarrow MgO(s)+CO_2(g)

The expression for K_{c} is:

K_{c}=\frac{[MgO][CO_2]}{[MgCO_3]}

In the above expression, magnesium oxide and magnesium carbonate will not appear because they are present in solid state.

So, the expression for K_c becomes:

K_{c}=[CO_2]

Hence, the equilibrium constant for the reaction is given above.

A 1.93-mol sample of xenon gas is maintained in a 0.805-L container at 306 K. Calculate the pressure of the gas using both the i
Alex

Answer : The pressure of the gas using both the ideal gas law and the van der Waals equation is, 60.2 atm and 44.6 atm respectively.

Explanation :

First we have to calculate the pressure of gas by using ideal gas equation.

PV=nRT

where,

P = Pressure of Xe gas = ?

V = Volume of Xe gas = 0.805 L

n = number of moles Xe = 1.93 mole

R = Gas constant = 0.0821L.atm/mol.K

T = Temperature of Xe gas = 306 K

Now put all the given values in above equation, we get:

P\times 0.805L=1.93mole\times (0.0821L.atm/mol.K)\times 306K

P=60.2atm

Now we have to calculate the pressure of gas by using van der Waals equation.

(P+\frac{an^2}{V^2})(V-nb)=nRT

P = Pressure of Xe gas = ?

V = Volume of Xe gas = 0.805 L

n = number of moles Xe = 1.93 mole

R = Gas constant = 0.0821L.atm/mol.K

T = Temperature of Xe gas = 306 K

a = pressure constant = 4.19L^2atm/mol^2

b = volume constant = 5.11\times 10^{-2}L/mol

Now put all the given values in above equation, we get:

(P+\frac{(4.19L^2atm/mol^2)\times (1.93mole)^2}{(0.805L)^2})[0.805L-(1.93mole)\times (5.11\times 10^{-2}L/mol)]=1.93mole\times (0.0821L.atm/mol.K)\times 306K

P=44.6atm

Therefore, the pressure of the gas using both the ideal gas law and the van der Waals equation is, 60.2 atm and 44.6 atm respectively.
