Al-Qaeda was born in the 1980s to support the fight of Islamic fighters, or Mujahedeen, against the Soviet military intervention in Afghanistan. After the Soviet retreat, Al-Qaeda´s goals were to oppose foreign presence, Western influences in Islamic countries and fight corrupt Islamic governments.
