Speed= distance/ time
speed = 360 / 40 = 90

Let u be speed of snail and x be distance traveled by snail.

We have been given that turtle is 11 times as fast as snail. So speed of turtle will be 11\cdot u. We are also given that they traveled a distance of 360 kilometers. So distance traveled by turtle will be 360-x.

Furthermore, we are given that they took 40 minutes to complete total distance.

Since we know \text{Speed}=\frac{\text{Distance}}{Time}

After substituting our given information into this formula we will get two equation and two unknowns.

u=\frac{x\text{ metres}}{40\cdot 60\text{ seconds}}

11\cdot u=\frac{(360-x)\text{ metres}}{40\cdot 60\text{ seconds}}\\

Now substituting u's values in second equation we will get

11\cdot \frac{x\text{ metres}}{240\text{ seconds}}=\frac{(360-x)\text{ metres}}{240\text{ seconds}}\\

11\cdot x =360-x\\
12\cdot x=360\\
x=30\text{ metres}

Now we will find speed of snail (u),

u=\frac{30\text{ metres}}{240\text{ seconds}}\\
u=\frac{1\text{ metres}}{8\text{ seconds}}

Now let us find speed of turtle (11u),

11\cdot u=11\cdot \frac{1\text{ metres}}{8\text{ seconds}}\\
\\
=\frac{11\cdot \text{ metres}}{8\text{ seconds}}

Therefore, speed of snail is 1/8 meters per second and speed of turtle is 11/8 meters per second.

LAST QUESTION ON MY TOPIC!!! PLEASE

<em><u>Slower car</u></em>

r = r

t = 12 hours

d = ?

<em><u>Faster car</u></em>

r = r + 20

t = 8 hours

d = ?

It doesn't matter what the exact distance is. You just have to know that the 2 distances are equal ie going to the mountains from his home is the same distance as going from the mountains to his home.

d = r * t

r * 12 hours = (r + 20)* 8 hours.   Remove the brackets on the right

r*12 = 8r + 20*8

r*12 = 8*r + 160

r*12 - 8r = 8r - 8r + 160

4r = 160

r = 40 miles / hour

=================

Slower Ride determines the distance.

d = r*t

d = 40 * 12

d = 480

Check

Use the faster rate (r + 20) = 40 + 20 = 60 mph

60 * 8 = 480. Both distances work out to be the same.

The answer actually is 4,245 BUT that is the correct way to do it because you take the smaller population away from the larger population in order to find their difference in sizes.

Find two numbers whose sum is 25 and the sum of whose reciprocals is 1/6
Katen [24]

Answer:

10 and 15

Step-by-step explanation:

Let 'x' and 'y' are the numbers we need to find.

x + y = 25 (two numbers whose sum is 25)

(1/x) + (1/y) = 1/6 (the sum of whose reciprocals is 1/6)

The solutions of the this system of equations are the numbers we need to find.

x = 25 - y

1/(25 - y) + 1/y = 1/6 multiply both sides by 6(25-y)y

6y + 6(25-y) = (25-y)y

6y + 150 - 6y = 25y - (y^2)

y^2 - 25y + 150 = 0 quadratic equation has 2 solutions

y1 = 15

y2 = 10

Thus we have :

First solution: for y = 15, x = 25 - 15 = 10

Second solution: for y = 10, x = 25 - 10 = 15

The first and the second solution are in fact the same one solution we are looking for: the two numbers are 10 and 15 (since the combination 10 and 15 is the same as 15 and 10).
