The first division of meiosis: the reduction division

In the first meiotic division, a diploid cell (with two copies of each chromosome) will undergo modifications to become haploid (only one copy of each chromosome). Thus, after DNA duplication and condensation in chromatids, the homologous chromosomes will become clogged at certain points and exchange genetic material. They are then sequestered on an equatorial plane. The homologous chromosomes will be separated and each will migrate to one of the two poles of the cell. We then obtain a first genetic mixing: interchromosomal mixing.

The second division of meiosis: the equational division

This second meiotic division is more like mitosis, except that it occurs in cells that are now haploid. Thus, the chromatids are separated and each of them is found in a new cell, called gamete.
