The scramble for Africa was the occupation and colonization of the African Continent by the major European Powers. It occurred between 1881 and 1914.

The country which made the first efforts for exploration was France when Pierre Savorgnan started exploring the former Kingdom of Kongo for France. These efforts caught the attention of the other European governments and several efforts of exploration and colonization started since 1881. At the time, only 10% of Africa was effectively colonized. By 1914, 90% of the continent would be colonized.
